|  | Bacardi (17) In the early part of the 19th Century, a wine merchant named Don Facundo Bacardi Masso emigrated from Spanish Catalonia to Santiago de Cuba. Experimenting with the destillation of rum in his own home, Don Facundo transformed rum from the harsh and fiery drink it was into a type of very drinkable, smooth spirit. He established the Bacardi Company in 1862.
